Location of this hike
GPS track for this hike (green track) along with the rest of Passage 3 (the red track)
As we neared Tucson, the sun was beginning to peek over the tops of the Catalina mountains. So Suzanne snapped this picture as Don drove south on I-10.
We find the trailhead just off Canelo Pass Road. This trailhead forms is the north end of Passage 2 and the south end of Passage 3.
Suzanne heads off toward that low pass where the trail crosses over this hills. The elevation of the pass is about 5,000 feet.
As we head up the hill, we look back toward the southeast. What a beauitful, clear day.
Suzanne gets to the pass first and photographs Don still heading up. Those are the Huachuca (Wha-chu-ka) mountains on the distant horizon.
On the other side of the pass are the Santa Rita mountains - that sharp peak is Wrightson Peak.
And back to the Huachuca's
A better view of Mount Wrightson - the sharp peak on the horizon (Suzanne's picture)
And yet another gate design on the AZT
A small reservoir impounding the drainage known as Lampshire Canyon. The dam is an earthen, man-made one.
A smaller dam downstream
A feed box where we turned around when we hiked to here from the north back in December of last year. This is our turnaround point for today. We will head back south to the trailhead and the Xterror.
Suzanne photographs Don as he heads back up to the pass. He's passing through a stretch of grasslands that is still dormant.
