After entering the Kaibab National forest, and just after the sign in the previous photo, the AZ Trail splits off and parallels FR 301. You can see this foot path leading off toward the trees ahead.
We rode this part of the trial for about a mile and found it to be soft in spots and very rocky in others. It also had more ups and downs than the road. It was taking so much of our energy that we soon parted the trail and reverted back to the road to finish this passage.
