A1BadgerSpringsNarrated Location of this hike (center of the purple circle) A2BadgerSpringsNarrated The hike track down Badger Springs Wash to the Agua Fria River (the blue GPS track) A3BadgerSpringsTrailNarrated The hike track - the red GPS track. A4BadgerSpringsTrail Where we hit the river and started up-river. Looking back, it may have been easier to hike downstream - it looks less rocky.
Suzanne'sP1020488Highlight As we approached the trailhead the Lexus' outdoor temp read 22F, the coldest we have been in a long time. By the time we parked the car the temp was down to 21F. Brrr! So we put on all the layers we had with us - and survived. IMG 5894-HDR(3) The sun was just breaking over the hill behind the trailhead sign. IMG 5897-HDR(3) Bob looks back as we start down the trail. IMG 5900-HDR(3)
IMG 5903-HDR(3) IMG 5906-HDR(3) IMG 5909-HDR(3) We're almost to the river. IMG 5912-HDR(3) Looking back up the trail.
IMG 5915-HDR(3) Ditto. IMG 5921-HDR(3) Ahhh. The river bed. There was only a trickle flowing, but there were many pools. IMG 5933-HDR(3) Bob and Suzanne preparing to look downstream to see if they can locate any rock art. IMG 5945-HDR(3) A sizable pool, Bob gets in the way trying to get his cold camera to work.
IMG 5948-HDR(3) Sans Bob. BBobsPicDSC 8374-HDR Looking at me trying to get a shot of a woodpecker in the bush. WoodpeckerBadgerSprings Success. Woodpecker, but beyond that, I don't have a clue since there is no red on its head. IMG 5981-HDR(3)
IMG 5951-HDR(3) There's a good set of rocks on the east side of the trail at the river. IMG 6003-HDR(3) And some rock art. BBobsPicDSC 8443-HDR(3) BBobsPicDSC 8386-HDR(3)
IMG 6015-HDR(3) Bob captures some good pics. IMG 6024-HDR(3) Bob's visiting the site where he left some graffiti when he was in grade school. ;-) BBobsPicDSC 8392-HDR(3) IMG 5954-HDR(3)
IMG 5969-HDR(3) IMG 5972-HDR(3) Some very faded rock art - barely visible BBobsPicDSC 8428-HDR(3) "This sun feels so good after a cold night" says one Saguaro to the other. BBobsPicDSC 8419-HDR(3) If I had hair, that's the haircut I would have.
BBobsPicDSC 8452-HDR(3) Suzanne and Don deciding to hike upstream (to the left) in spite of the rocky terrain. BBobsPicDSC 8455-HDR(3) BBobsPicDSC 8458-HDR(3) Someone did a great job on making this rock garden look almost natural. BBobsPicDSC 8461-HDR(3) We keep looking back as we proceed up river.
BBobsPicDSC 8464-HDR(3) BBobsPicDSC 8467-HDR(3) A lot more rocks to hop ahead. BBobsPicDSC 8470-HDR(3) Interesting rock formation up there. IMG 6045-HDR(3)Insert It's Senior Wences' puppet Johnny's final resting place. (Inset: Johnny, when he was active)
IMG 6051-HDR(3) BBobsPicDSC 8476-HDR(3) These rocks don't seem to come to an end. BBobsPicDSC 8479-HDR(3) So we turn around and head back. IMG 6060-HDR(3) Can you see the silhouette of a horse head embedded in this rock? It's not easy to find
IMG 6066-HDR(3) Some of the calm pools have some ice. BBobsPicDSC 8488-HDR(3) From glacial scouring or from something else? IMG 6075-HDR(3) An interesting quartz inclusion in a basalt rock. BBobsPicDSC 8500-HDR(3)Cropped Is this a Cassin's Sparrow?
IMG 6072-HDR(3) IMG 6082-HDR Looks like a stone-like mortar in this crack across this rock. devided IMG 6084-HDR The old, nearly-ghost town of Cordes, just west of the I-17 on Bloody Basin Road. This is where residents of the Richinbar mine bought canned goods and staples in the 1930's. IMG 6095-HDR(3) Apparently the store is closed now. Sorry, you can no longer reprovision here.
BBobsPicDSC 8530-HDR(3) Hope you don't come here needing gas. BBobsPicDSC 8521-HDR(3) Do you know the make of this old truck? BBobsPicDSC 8527-HDR(3) THe front emblem has an embedded, classic, Chevrolet "bow tie" symbol. BBobsPicDSC 8512-HDR(3)
BBobsPicDSC 8518-HDR(3)Compare Our family had a 1948 Chevy just like this sedan only it was red and not "a rust color." (Inset: '48 Chevy) IMG 6089-HDR(3) Suzanne'sP1020503-HDR I took down the VIN #, and will try to find out if the manufacturer's warranty is still good. IMG 6099-HDR
IMG 6107-HDR(3) Looking toward a number of mines and homes in the area around Cleator, the little mining town known as the gateway to the Bradshaw Mountains. IMG 6117-HDR This is Cleator, a town on the way to Crown King Suzanne'sP1020512-HDR Suzanne is drawn to a perenniel yard sale in Cleator. IMG 6113-HDR(3) The story of Cleator. Note that the sign was placed there by the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus. What is that????
IMG 6113-HDR(3)Explanation Suzanne'sP1020510-HDR Suzanne'sP1020509-HDR The store was closed, but the bar, the "Cleator Bar and Yacht Club" was open, serving only beer, wine and chips according to the bar keeper. We were hoping for at least burgers. The bar keeper was working outside and so we struck up a conversation with him. He invited us in for a look. IMG 6116-HDR(3) Lots of atmosphere to this place. Other than the bar keeper, we were the only ones there.
IMG 6108-HDR Outside, we noticed this "restricted" parking area. Not to be insulted because of the vehicles we drive,.......... IMG 6108-HDR2 ......this is what the sign read when we left town. Now you're talking. Eat your heart out, Jeep lovers. ;-) After leaving our mark, we headed back to I-17 and lunch at the Rock Springs Cafe in Rock Springs, AZ. A good, beautiful and satisfying day.
