How the dry-lightning-caused Dude fire progressed over the 4 days after its start. The fire burned much of the area of this hike. Ultimately, 24,000 acres burned in 2 national forests, 63 homes were destroyed, and six firefighters were killed. Total forces/resources used to suppress the Dude Fire included 14 helicopters, 14 water tenders, 10 air tankers, 12 dozers, 61 fire crews ... a total of 2632 people. The hike here described covers from the Washington Park Trailhead to FR 144, but the fire traveled on east to consume the historic Zane Grey cabin and the fish hatchery along Tonto Creek.
