At the start of our hike we encounter a sign that cautions about the potential perils that remain since the Cave Creek fire that burned this area in June of 2005. The fire eventually burned 243,950 acres and is the 3rd largest in Arizona history. It eventually killed what was the world's largest Saguaro which once stood 46 feet tall and had a base circumference of 7 feet 10 inches. The vegetation is coming back but the land remains quite stark.
