Looking east at the profile of Half Dome. We thought about the hike to the top of Half dome, but the park has recently started requiring permits for the final ascent. These are very hard to get, especially at the last minute. As we learned more about the final ascent, the 14 mile round-trip trail and the use of "the cables" that are in place to allow you to ascend the steep (45 degrees) rock face, we were content to hike some easier hikes.
